What is Futsal?

Futsal is a fast-paced, small-sided version of soccer played indoors on a hard court. The game typically involves five players on each team, including a goalkeeper. It originated in South America in the 1930s and has grown in popularity worldwide, especially in countries like Brazil and Spain. Unlike traditional soccer, Futsal emphasizes skillful ball control and quick decision-making due to its smaller playing area and fewer players.

The tournament showcases some of the best Futsal talent and highlights the sport's growing popularity internationally. In addition to the FIFA World Cup, there are also various continental championships, such as the UEFA Futsal Championship in Europe and the CONCACAF Futsal Championship, which further promote the sport at different levels.

How do the rules differ from outdoor soccer?


The rules of Futsal differ slightly from those of outdoor soccer. For instance, the ball is smaller with a low bounce, which encourages players to develop better dribbling and passing skills on the ground. Professional matches are played in two 20-minute halves, and the game promotes continuous play, with the clock stopping for certain interruptions.


In Futsal, teams are also allowed to make unlimited player substitutions throughout the match. This rule allows for a dynamic and fast-paced game, as players can rotate in and out without the need for a stoppage in play, as long as the substitutions occur during certain situations, like when the ball is out of play.



What size is a Futsal Ball?


FIFA recognizes the following standard Futsal ball sizes:

  • Size 4: This is the official size used in professional Futsal matches for players aged 11 and older.

  • Size 3: This smaller size is typically used for younger players, particularly those under 10 years old.


In official competitions, only Size 4 balls are used, ensuring consistency in play across all professional levels.
